The F-Files

I’ve been trying to wrack my brain for the last few days for something to write about and then this gem of insight and scientific understanding came up this morning. As a result I’m going to add a new feature to the Liberal Nerd Chronicles called…

*Insert Dramatic Music*

The Face Palm Files:

So apparently this came and went on Friday and I initially missed it, but thanks to The Daily Kos and Wonkette.com this little gem popped up.

Let me preface this by saying I’m glad to know that Mrs. Romney was not hurt in any way by the incident and I wish her all the best and a nice long vacation after Mitt gets his ass handed to him come Nov 6th, 2012.

The back-story is this; sometime on Friday Anne Romney was flying to Santa Monica, CA for a fundraiser and had to make an emergency landing due to an electrical problem. Now apparently the plane cabin had some smoke inside, the pilots were able to land safely and everyone on board was ok…

… and then the wisdom and scientific knowledge of Mitt was displayed…

“I appreciate the fact that she is on the ground, safe and sound. And I don’t think she knows just how worried some of us were,” Romney said. “When you have a fire in an aircraft, there’s no place to go, exactly, there’s no — and you can’t find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don’t open. I don’t know why they don’t do that. It’s a real problem. So it’s very dangerous. And she was choking and rubbing her eyes. Fortunately, there was enough oxygen for the pilot and copilot to make a safe landing in Denver. But she’s safe and sound.”

Ok Mitt, let me explain in simple terms about air pressure in a way you will understand. Take for instance the Bombardier Learjet 60xr. It’s a lower end business jet but I would imagine you’ve flown in something similar. The operating ceiling of the Bombardier Learjet 60xr is 51,000 ft., thought the FAA limits commercial aircraft to 40,000 ft. for safety reasons.

Now any aircraft that climbs above 10,000 ft. is required to have a pressurized cabin because as you get higher into the sky air pressure decreases. Air pressure at sea level is approximately 14.7 psi (pounds per square inch), air pressure at 10,000 ft. is approximately 10.1 psi which is about 69% of sea level air pressure and at 40,000 ft. the air pressure drops to 2.71 psi which is about 18% of sea level pressure.

The effects of low pressure at altitude can include, hypoxia, altitude sickness, decompression sickness, and barotraumas. I won’t try and explain them here but let’s just say it’s a bad thing, but if you want to know more here’s a link for you

Wikipedia – Cabin Pressurization

Now before you ask, I can see that confused look on your face, yes this is the same for all planes no matter how much you paid for it.

No Mitt, even if it’s written off as a business expense it’s still the same.

Ok, do you understand now?

No? Ok let me try and explain another way. You know when you pop a cork on a bottle of Champaign and it goes pop? Yes I know you don’t drink, but I’m sure you’ve seen them. Ok good, that’s because the pressure inside the Champaign bottle in much higher than outside the bottle. The champaign inside the bottle is between 70 and 90 psi. Ok let’s use 80 psi as an average, now normal air pressure is about 18% of the pressure inside the bottle. That’s about the same pressure difference between the aircraft and air pressure at 40,000 ft. Now Mitt, what happens when you pull the cork on a bottle of champaign?

Yes, it shoots out of the bottle and flies across the room with a loud pop.

Yes Mitt, that’s why an airplane doesn’t have windows that open.

Yes Mitt, that would be bad, it’s called explosive decompression.

Ok Mitt, why don’t you go think about that for a while.

Bye Mitt

Ok folks, so I’m not sure how or why Mitt doesn’t have at least a rudimentary understanding of air pressure and aircraft pressurization. I mean heck just watch any movie in the last 50 years and you’re bound to come across a plane depressurizing. Maybe he has seen it, but thought it was just Hollywood making things up. I’m working on a couple of theories.

Number one is Mitt Romney is pulling an elaborate Punk’D style prank on the Republican party because he saw just how far down the rabbit hole the crazy has gone. Mitts secret agenda is to drive the GOP over the cliff because he’s actually a masterful tactician and liberal.

Number Two is Mitt Romney is the end result of a private education. The kind he wants to give all American children by ending The Department of Education and giving everyone a voucher. This means that Mitt is as dumb as a bag of hammers.

I’m not sure which terrifies me more…
